Canon S-900 running in XP

Just got off the phone after 2 hrs of jumping thru hoops with the Canon support dept. Installed my new Canon S-900 ran a test page which printed out OK. Went to printing preferences changed a paper setting and this is where all hell started. Microsoft flag came up and said spooler exe error, sorry app has to close. Printer lost connection from this point on. Had to reboot to cancel print job that didnt print. Did a check of entire operating with tech. Went to places in system I had never been before and dont want to go again. Deleted numerous settings and files. Nothing helped. Final ruling was re install XP. Anyone had this problem? Had an HP Photosmart printer on system before. Im open to suggestions. :cry:
