Canon compatible cartridges

I am thinking of buying a Canon ip4500 printer. I intend on buying compatible cartridges but needed some advice.
I have heard you need to remove the chip from an original canon cartridge, and place it on the compatible one. By doing this you also lose ink monitoring. Is this safe? Re-using a chip many times?
